Abstract

During the first decades of the 20th century, tourism was a novel phenomenon in Chile. New transport technologies were allowing a significant boost to travel through the territory. This situation changed radically with the creation of the State Railways Company and the construction of lines and branches. During the 1930s and 1940s, the company promoted interest in visiting tourist destinations from Arica to Punta Arenas, while having a rail and maritime system. After reviewing the management of the State Railways office in the construction of hotels as a tourist initiative, the 1939 Hotel de la Laguna San Rafael building is studied as a significant case, in which a concern about the occupation of the territory together with the conception of geography as a landscape.
